Blog Reflections...

This whole blog idea sounded like a fun thing to do to keep friends and family up to date on our travels and what is going on in life since it has been "go-go-go" since our wedding.  The ability to archive our travels was appealing and so we thought, "yeah, we should do it".  Needless to say, Tommy is a busy man and "our" effort quickly became "my" effort (which I don't mind, but have hope).  He loves to write, but it takes him a while to get his writing done.  He's good at it...I suppose that's why.  I obviously have looked at this in a different way...not super concerned with my writing skills and just going with it (if that's good or bad..I'm not sure).  When I started writing about Tommy's progress of his project on El Cap, I had NO idea that this would be linked all over the place and read around the world.  Finding that out was intimidating.  I didn't know how personal to be...I felt like I had to "perform" in a sense, which quickly transformed things a little bit.  I was worried about what people were going to think of what I wrote, and make judgements about me, etc.  I got nervous about writing and got a little bit lost with the whole thing.  Starting a blog and putting information into cyber-space means it's there for all to read...I guess I just never thought anyone would find it.

In my efforts to think a little bit more about this blog thing, I've decided not to fret about it or overanalyze things and just write like I started...to my friends and family.  I will no longer worry about the evil climbing forum-commenters (which I was out of the loop and didn't realize existed) and just do my thing.  For whatever it's worth, it feels good to get that off of my chest.

  1. Keep on writing! It's been fun and inspiring to read your travels and things, even though don't know you personally. Guess the blogs are about having fun anyway so don't be too serious about it.

  2. I'll second that, keep on writing!

I find it really inspiring to read about what you and Tommy are up to - so much so I've decided to try and get into the whole big-wall thing (not as easy as you might imagine in the UK - all our cliffs are very small by your standards!)

Leave the forum trolls in their dank, dark caves and keep inspiring the rest of us with tales of your adventures!

  3. Keep it real and personable! Thats the best thing about this blog, you two and who you are and you that comes through in the blog.

I also don't know you in person, but having seen both of you in a variety of climbing movies I feel like reading your blog is more about the adventure of Becca and Tommy, instead of how amazing you guys are at climbing. I think seeing this side of you will make the next climbing film you are in seem more "real" or something.

Keep up the good work and like Phil said, don't worry about the trolls, they'd say the same thing about anyone.

  4. There are evil Forum people in EVERY market, Climbing, Cars, Movies, Knitting. You can't worry about them. If they have constructive criticism then they will make sure to address it with you in the proper manner. Other then that let it roll off your back and do what you are doing.

  6. It's interesting how fun little projects can take on a life of their own sometimes. I'm just glad to keep reading, and happy you're posting!

  7. I don't know you, but like many, am familiar due to climbing. Personally... I LOVE that I found your blog. I love that you are willing to share your great adventures, and just be you. People can be mean, and that is sad. I do hope you keep up the blog. You're welcome to come visit my blog anytime, but I guarantee it isn't nearly as interesting :P

  8. Ultimately, your blog is about how real people (you and Tommy) exercise their gifts as human beings. Your blog is a celebration of living. I hope that doesn't sound cheesy. There's lot's of filtered tripe in the magazines these days, so it's refreshing to gain insight into the "human" side of climbing, not merely the grades, grit, and sponsors.

And yes, you are a good writer.

  11. Hey Becca,

You are doing a great job blogging and reporting on what you and Tommy are up to. I'm sure its not easy at times being exposed so publicly, now that you are married to a famous guy (at least famous in some circles). We can all empathise, and at the same time try imagine what we'd do put in this situation.

I checked your blog just now to see if there is any news of the coming Red Bolt/David Lama (Lame A$$) climb. People are reporting they intend to rap bolt the Compressor route. I hope some of the climbers with ethics will start cutting the Red Bull fixed ropes and maybe even break the punk kid Lama's arm. I don't usually advocate violence but RB intends to destroy one of the most iconic lines on the planet, even though its already infamous for being bolted.

  12. Coop, you're famous! I believe you have so much to share with the world, and I love that this blog gives me the opportunity to stay close to you and hear what's going on in your world. Don't think about the audience, follow your heart.

    Love, Colly
